The machine is a tracked carrier with a mulching head bolted to the front. Steel teeth on that head spin fast and chew standing wood into chips. It works a tree from the top down, so nothing has to be dragged or stacked. The tracks spread the weight, so it floats over soft red clay and does not leave deep ruts.
On the day of the job, we go over the ground with you and mark what stays. Good hardwoods, a septic field, a spring or a property pin all get left alone. Then the mulcher starts at one edge and works across the block in a set pattern. Nothing gets hauled off the property and nothing gets burned, so the wood stays on your ground.
You keep the big trees on the place if you want them. We take the understory out and leave the oak and hickory you want to hold onto. We pick what the mulching head touches, one stem at a time. A dozer cannot work that way, because it pushes over everything in front of the blade.
When we pull out, the ground is covered in a layer of wood chips. Stumps get ground flush or close to it, and the roots stay down in the dirt. You can walk it the same day and usually drive a truck across it. That mulch layer holds red clay in place and slows privet and kudzu from taking back over.
Acreage is the first thing we measure, and how thick the growth is comes second. Light underbrush under mature trees goes fast, because the mulching head is barely loaded. Ten years of privet and sweetgum with real trunks in it goes a lot slower. The same acre can take an hour or take most of a day.
Terrain is next, because the foothills around Shelby roll more than people expect. A side slope slows the machine down and changes how we lay out the passes.
