Forestry Mulching in Shelby, NC

Forestry Mulching · Shelby, NC

Forestry Mulching Around Shelby and Cleveland County

Forestry mulching clears brush and small trees without tearing up the ground. Around Shelby, NC that usually means privet and kudzu on a fence line you can't walk. It can also mean pine and sweetgum crowding out the hardwoods you want to keep. Our tracked forestry mulcher grinds it where it stands and leaves the wood on the ground as mulch.

We own our equipment, so the mulcher rides in on our lowboy and gets to work. Skid steers with root grapples, excavators, a dozer with a root rake and grapple trucks back it up. LDS Solutions is veteran owned, and our own crew runs the machines. Our forestry mulching services reach about 25 miles around Shelby, out to Forest City, Rutherfordton, Spindale and Grover.

What Forestry Mulching Looks Like on Site

The machine is a tracked carrier with a mulching head bolted to the front. Steel teeth on that head spin fast and chew standing wood into chips. It works a tree from the top down, so nothing has to be dragged or stacked. The tracks spread the weight, so it floats over soft red clay and does not leave deep ruts.

On the day of the job, we go over the ground with you and mark what stays. Good hardwoods, a septic field, a spring or a property pin all get left alone. Then the mulcher starts at one edge and works across the block in a set pattern. Nothing gets hauled off the property and nothing gets burned, so the wood stays on your ground.

You keep the big trees on the place if you want them. We take the understory out and leave the oak and hickory you want to hold onto. We pick what the mulching head touches, one stem at a time. A dozer cannot work that way, because it pushes over everything in front of the blade.

When we pull out, the ground is covered in a layer of wood chips. Stumps get ground flush or close to it, and the roots stay down in the dirt. You can walk it the same day and usually drive a truck across it. That mulch layer holds red clay in place and slows privet and kudzu from taking back over.

What Decides the Cost and the Schedule?

Acreage is the first thing we measure, and how thick the growth is comes second. Light underbrush under mature trees goes fast, because the mulching head is barely loaded. Ten years of privet and sweetgum with real trunks in it goes a lot slower. The same acre can take an hour or take most of a day.

Terrain is next, because the foothills around Shelby roll more than people expect. A side slope slows the machine down and changes how we lay out the passes. Wet bottom ground near a creek or a pond bank has to wait for a dry stretch. Old fence wire, rock, buried trash and stumps hidden in the brush all cost time.

Access decides whether the lowboy and the mulcher can even get onto the property. We need a gate or an opening wide enough for a machine on a trailer. Most forestry mulching jobs we run take one to three days on site. We are fully insured, and you can set up a free on-site estimate at (704) 600-8146.

Who We Do Forestry Mulching For Around Shelby

Hunting land is a good share of our forestry mulching work, from Lawndale to Boiling Springs. We cut shooting lanes and food plots through heavy understory without stripping the topsoil. Trails for a truck or a side by side get cleared in one pass. The big oaks stay standing, so the deer keep the food they already have on the place.

Farms and homesteads use forestry mulching to take pasture back from brush and briars. An idle field around here grows up thick after two or three humid summers. We reclaim pasture and open fence lines for tractors around Cherryville, Lincolnton, Dallas and Bessemer City. Hurricane Helene left tree damage across western North Carolina, and that downed material mulches down fine.

Overgrown lots are the other steady call, usually when the county wants the place mowed. We do brush clearing on vacant lots in Kings Mountain and over in Gastonia. Forestry mulching handles trees up to mid-size and leaves the root systems in the ground. If you need the roots out and a clean surface to build on, ask about land clearing.

FAQ

Forestry Mulching Questions, Answered

Common questions about forestry mulching across Shelby, NC and 25 miles around. Don't see yours? Give us a call and ask.

Call (704) 600-8146

What does forestry mulching cost?
Price comes down to acreage and how thick the growth is. Slope and access matter too, because the machine has to get in and turn around. A half acre of light underbrush is not the same job as two acres of heavy privet. We look at it in person and give you a number. Estimates are free.
How many acres can you mulch in a day?
It depends on the growth. Light underbrush under standing timber can run several acres in a day. Thick privet and sweetgum with real trunks can take most of a day for one acre. Most forestry mulching jobs we run around Shelby take one to three days on site.
What is left behind after forestry mulching?
A layer of wood chips over the whole area, a few inches deep. Stumps get ground flush or close to it, and the roots stay in the ground. There are no burn piles and nothing to haul off. The mulch holds red clay in place and slows regrowth for a season or two.
How big of a tree can a forestry mulcher take?
The mulcher handles brush and trees up to mid-size. Past that, the head takes too long and the job gets expensive by the hour. Big trees are better dropped first with a saw or an excavator, then mulched. Tree removal is a separate service, and we can look at both on one visit.
What is the difference between forestry mulching and land clearing?
Forestry mulching grinds growth in place and leaves the roots and topsoil alone. Land clearing pulls the roots out with a root rake and hauls the debris off. Pick forestry mulching for underbrush, trails and hardwoods you want to keep. Light grass and briars are a bush hogging job instead.
