National guides such as LawnStarter and HomeAdvisor publish similar spreads: roughly $700 to $2,300 per acre for lightly wooded ground and $3,400 to $6,200 for heavy woods. The low national numbers usually describe flat, sandy, easy-access land. The western Piedmont is not that.

Land clearing around Shelby means red clay that ruts when wet, rolling foothill ground, and pine, sweetgum and privet that grow back thick. Those conditions push most local jobs toward the middle of the ranges above.

What makes the price go up or down?

Five things set most of the spread.

Tree size and density. A briar patch and a stand of 12-inch pines are different jobs. Bigger wood means bigger machines, more hours and more debris.

Stumps and roots. Grinding a stump costs less than digging it out, but ground you plan to build on needs the roots gone. Access and terrain. A gate wide enough for a lowboy, firm ground and open lines keep hours down. Slopes, wet bottoms and tight access add them.

Season. Late fall through early spring is the best clearing window in North Carolina. The ground is firmer, the machines rut less, and leaf-off makes the work faster.
