Forestry Mulching
Forestry mulching grinds brush and small trees into a mulch layer where they stand. Nothing gets hauled off and nothing gets burned.
Land clearing in Polkville usually means farmland and forest, the country NC 226 crosses in northwestern Cleveland County. Polkville itself covers about 1.9 square miles, and 516 people lived there at the 2020 census. The town sits about 1,083 feet up, with the South Mountains to the northwest. Fields left unmowed here go to brush, and the woods creep out over the fence lines.
We are based in Shelby, and Polkville sits about 10 miles north-northwest of us in a straight line. By road it is about 12 miles up NC 226, which leaves Shelby as Polkville Road. Farm fields along that highway suit bush hogging, and the woodlots between them suit forestry mulching. LDS Solutions is veteran owned and fully insured, and every estimate is free and done on site.

Three state highways meet in Polkville, with NC 226 through the center and NC 182 starting east toward Lincolnton. NC 10 also starts in town and runs north as Casar Road, toward Casar and South Mountains State Park. From Metcalf north, NC 226 is the South Mountain Scenery byway, designated for its views of the South Mountains. Northwest of town, NC 226 crosses those mountains on its way to Marion, 31 miles out.
USGS maps put the center of Polkville in the Upper First Broad River watershed, so runoff here reaches that river. USGS stream maps show Brushy Creek and Hinton Creek within about 3 miles of the town center. The county's 872 farms counted 18,817 acres of hay in 2022, more than any other single crop. Out SR 1372, northwest of town, the John Lattimore House was listed on the National Register in 1982.
On a farm tract near Polkville, the first rule to check is how much ground a job opens up. Under G.S. 113A-57, disturbing more than one acre on a tract takes an approved erosion and sedimentation control plan. A drive cleared 20 feet wide and 1,000 feet back from NC 182 opens almost half an acre. We measure the ground a job will disturb at the free estimate, before any date is set.
Under G.S. 87-122, NC 811 gets three full working days of notice before we dig for a culvert or stump. Burning brush near Polkville's woodlots brings in a second agency, the NC Forest Service. A fire lit from midnight to 4 p.m. in or within 500 feet of protected woodland needs its permit. Our forestry mulcher grinds brush where it stands and grapple trucks haul off logs, so many jobs skip burning.
All three highways that meet in Polkville are state roads, and under G.S. 136-93 NCDOT has complete control over them. NCDOT's driveway access policy says a permit is normally not required for a single residence. It still encourages you to contact the District Engineer about safety and design issues and the driveway pipe. For a single-family home, NCDOT installs the ditch pipe at its own expense once you buy and deliver it.
The policy calls for at least 20 feet of that pipe. Its inside diameter is 15 inches or more unless the District Engineer directs otherwise. Behind the ditch, we clear and grade the drive path, and that ground counts toward the one-acre line. Your supplier delivers the stone, and we spread and compact it as part of our gravel driveway work. At the estimate we look at where the drive will meet the highway and where water crosses it.

Highly recommend Dewey and the team at LDS Solutions! They have done phenomenal work for us at Wallace Haven LLC clearing downed and dying trees, cleaning up overgrown areas, and helping transform our property. They've been dependable, hardworking, professional, and easy to work with from start to finish.
We couldn't be happier with the work this crew did on our property! They handled land clearing, forestry mulching, brush hogging, and even some skid steer and excavator work. The land clearing and mulching made such a huge difference; it looks like a whole new space now. We'll definitely be using them again!
Hurricane Helene took down many of our trees, preventing us from enjoying our space by the creek. These folks came, developed a plan, reviewed it with me, provided a fair price, and restored my access to the woods and creek. They also left the property spotless once the project was completed. CLEAN!
Dewey came to my home in Shelby. He used his forestry mulcher and cleared my back yard and fence line. He also removed all the roots and vines running up on my house. Before, I could not see my fence or shed. I recommend anyone to use him and his services.
I fought a yard slope for our above ground pool for a few years now. Dewey showed up and solved it all within a day and the grading is top notch. 100% recommended!
Dewey forestry mulched for 11 days. They also excavated and dug out two 24 inch culvert pipes to allow us access on land. Amazing job, highly recommended to anyone needing work done! On time every day and under budget!
These guys do great work at a great price! Thank you!
