Kings Mountain sits at about 950 feet, with harder ridges just east of town. Kings Pinnacle in Crowders Mountain State Park tops out at 1,705 feet. Much of the county runs on Cecil and Pacolet soils, the local red clay. That clay holds water after rain and turns slick under a machine.
Building has picked up here. The Catawba Two Kings Casino is going up on Kings Mountain Boulevard, just off I-85 at Exit 5. The city also approved Lacey Orchard at Crocker and Shelby roads, close to 100 acres of houses and townhomes. Albemarle is working to reopen its lithium mine along the same stretch of I-85.
