Slopes here mostly run between 2 and 15 percent, so the ground rolls rather than lies flat. Wet clay ruts badly under tracks, so we watch the forecast before we bring machines in.
The city covers under five square miles, so most acreage sits outside the limits. Tracts out there tend to be small and wooded, many of them under twenty acres. South Ridge Business Park anchors the industrial side near the Edgewood Road exit off I-85. The city expects room there for seven to ten more plants over the next fifteen years.
Whetstone Mountain rises west of town and Crowders Mountain State Park is about ten minutes away. Ground near those ridges runs rockier and steeper. Northwest of town the land drains toward Long Creek, which feeds the city reservoirs. We plan the clearing so soil stays put on the slope.
